Streets Department Schedules Maintenance Work on Spring Garden Tunnel

Philadelphia - The Spring Garden Street Tunnel, west of Pennsylvania Ave, will be closed to all traffic during the week of May 20, Streets Commissioner Kristin Del Rossi announced today. The following temporary closure is scheduled to be in effect from Monday, May 20 at 8:00 a.m. through Friday, May 24th at 12:00 p.m. If the work is completed more quickly than anticipated, the road will be opened ahead of schedule.

  • Westbound traffic on Spring Garden Street will be stopped at Pennsylvania Avenue. Vehicles should continue along Spring Garden Street and use the Art Museum Circle to avoid the closure.

The temporary closure will allow the city to inspect and maintain the tunnel structure. The full-time closure has been scheduled in order to expedite the maintenance and inspection and provide a safe work environment for the crews.

All work should be completed, and traffic should be restored by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24th. For the duration of the work, Streets Department crews will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience to affected drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The Streets Department thanks citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation during this project.
