Spain donates 20 million euros in humanitarian aid for Afghan refugees

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, announced today that Spain will make a contribution of 20 million euros in humanitarian assistance for the Afghan crisis, of which at least 7 million will be provided this year.

José Manuel Albares, who made this announcement during his speech at the Conference on Humanitarian Aid for Afghanistan held by videoconference from Geneva, recalled Spain's commitment to the Afghan people and the need to provide urgent aid 'to avoid the drama of a large scale humanitarian crisis'.

The minister also sought to acknowledge the efforts made by those who are helping the many displaced persons and other victims of the Afghan crisis, particularly those who have lost their lives in undertaking this mission. 'It is essential to ensure that humanitarian workers can undertake their work in safe conditions', he stated.

Of the many fields that require Spain's attention, José Manuel Albares sought to highlight the 2.2 million refugees that have been received in neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, which he recently visited, Spain's priority of guaranteeing the education of more than 2.5 million children and the attention for the most vulnerable groups, particularly Afghan women and girls.

'We are not going to turn our backs on this crisis', stated the minister at the end of his speech, which he concluded by announcing to the Afghan people that Spain will continue to work 'so that so many years spent on creating a better future for the country will not have been in vain'.
