Concordia-Chicago University Band marks 25th anniversary with Patriotic Pops concert

6/11/2019

The University Band of Concordia-Chicago will perform its annual Patriotic Pops Concert on Saturday, June 29 on the University campus, celebrating community and country with timeless music while honoring service men and women.

The free concert will begin at 6:30 p.m., with concessions opening at 5:30 p.m., on the Addison Hall lawn, 7400 Augusta St., River Forest, IL. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the Chapel of Our Lord. Free, handicapped-accessible parking is available in the visitors' lot north of the University parking structure off Bonnie Brae Place.

This year's featured soloist is soprano Katherine Keberlein, a River Forest resident, singing works by George and Ira Gershwin and several other composers. Keberlein has performed all over the world as a guest of the State Department with Trio Chicago and Friends, as well as various performances with Chicago's renowned chorus of the Music of the Baroque. She is a Joseph Jefferson Award-winning actress, member of the Actors' Equity and the Screen Actors Guild, and has performed with over 30 theater companies in the Chicago area. Her TV credits include 'Proven Innocent,' 'APB,' 'Chicago Med,' 'Shameless,' 'Chicago PD' and 'Sirens.'

In addition to a number of patriotic songs, the University Band will perform 'Big Band Signatures,' arranged by John Higgins, which includes pieces by Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Count Basie and Glen Miller. Selections from 'My Fair Lady' and many other works will also be performed. Jean Harrison Bojes will provide commentary, introducing the repertoire and providing interesting facts about each piece.

The University Band comprises approximately 70 musicians, including residents from surrounding communities as well as Concordia University Chicago students, faculty and staff. Conductor Dr. Richard Fischer, distinguished professor of music and the Fred and Jane Wittlinger Endowed Chair for Music Performance, founded the University Band in 1994, and this concert celebrates the ensemble's 25th anniversary.

Costs for ice cream, boxed meals and water will range from $1 to $5. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and/or lawn chairs; a limited number of folding chairs will be available. For questions, call 708-209-3555 or email [email protected].
