$2.8 Million in grants awarded to Alabama arts organizations

Announcing project, operating support, and partnership grant recipients

MONTGOMERY, Ala., (September 14, 2021) - At its September quarterly meeting in Jasper, Ala., the Alabama State Council on the Arts awarded 156 grants totaling $2,853,200 to 132 organizations across the state.

Organizations providing public programs in arts education, folk arts, community arts, literary arts, dance, music, theatre, and visual art forms received support through this competitive process.

'We are pleased to support educational groups, community organizations, and arts institutions with these grants,' said Jim Harrison III, Chair of the Council on the Arts. 'Funds awarded through the Council's grantmaking process elevate arts in education, strengthen cultural expression, and attract tourists and new industry to our colorful and vibrant state.'

During their time in the host city, the Council on the Arts learned more about Jasper's arts community and attended a reception highlighting local artists. Support for arts programming is critical for a vibrant creative community, which results in a thriving arts economy, a workforce ready for innovation, and a high quality of life for all residents.

However, the needs of the state's arts and culture sector are greater than the Council can fund, with the requested amount in this grant cycle totaling nearly $4 million. More grant awards will be announced in early December. The next grant application deadline is March 1, 2022, for individual artist fellowships and grants for planning, design, and construction of cultural facilities.

Dr. Andrew Henley, Deputy Director of the Council, noted that over 180 applications were received during this grant cycle. 'While partially a result of the current challenges facing our communities, we are also confident this significant increase in applications is an outcome of the Council's continued efforts to improve our funding processes to better serve Alabama's creative sector.'

Additionally, $814,100 in federal arts recovery funding was awarded at the September meeting.

For more information about the Alabama State Council on the Arts, visit arts.alabama.gov.

The grants below are in response to applications submitted under a June 1, 2021 deadline and will support projects and programming between October 1, 2021, and September 30, 2022.
