With today's intense rainfall, flash flooding is occurring on many low-lying roads and areas across the city. The City of Ames, Iowa State University, and the National Weather Service (NWS) are also monitoring river levels for potential river flooding.
Do NOT drive across streets or roads with standing water. Turn around and find a new route. People should not enter flood water. Flood water can be deceptively deep, hide washed out roadways and debris, or be contaminated.
Up-to-date information on projected river levels along both Skunk River and Squaw Creek is available from the Iowa Flood Information System. A link to that site is available on the City of Ames website at www.cityofames.org/flood.
If water levels threaten nearby electric metering equipment or transformers, electricity may be temporarily disconnected. To report an electric outage, call Ames Electric Services Outage Reporting at 515.239.5240 and leave your address.
This is rapidly evolving weather situation. Residents should monitor local media for updates and listen to weather radios. To report hazardous conditions or damage, call the Ames Police Department at 515.239.5133. Please do not call 911 or the non-emergency dispatch number to find out road conditions. Dispatchers will not have that information, and extra calls can distract dispatchers from handling emergency calls.
Further information will be released as it becomes available.
