The Federal Supreme Court (STF) receives, since 17/10, the researcher Tainá Garcia Maia, from the University of Münster, Germany, for academic exchange. She is carrying out two research projects on the interconnections between the phenomena of poverty and inequality and the positions adopted by the STF and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on the subject.

Lasting six weeks, this is the first in-person exchange under the technical cooperation agreement signed between the German university and the STF. The student will work with the Secretariat for Major Studies, Research and Information Management (SAE) in the collection of data related to ongoing projects.

Inequalities

Tainá is a researcher and PhD student at the University of Münster in cooperation with the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). She is part of a research team at the Law Faculty developing a project called 'Correcting inequalities through law'.

The research seeks to understand how 18 constitutional and international courts (Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, India, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States, UN Human Rights Committee, European Court of Human Rights, Inter-American Court of Human Rights and African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights) understand the content and scope of the right to equality and non-discrimination.

The second research is Tainá's PhD project, whose object is the interconnections between the phenomena of poverty and inequality, taking as a case study the strategies developed by courts to identify and address poverty as an equality issue. The focus is on the positions adopted by the STF and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Internationalization

The objective of the partnership between the STF and the German university is to improve the internationalization of the Court and stimulate the development of innovative scientific research, with the construction and dissemination of academic dialogue and knowledge. Researchers and civil servants from both sides will have contact with the reality and the daily environment of the two institutions.
