Local Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Honors Two of TLU’s Own

The Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce recently held its 35th Annual Awards Banquet, where they honored businesses, individuals, and community groups who make Seguin a better place.

Among those receiving awards are two of TLU's own: Dr. Cesar Silva, Assistant Professor for Mexican American Studies and the Director of the Center for Mexican American Studies, and attorney and TLU alum Paul Gaytan.

Silva was presented with this year's Youth Leadership Award for his contributions to Mexican American studies. He was honored to accept the award, but quickly passed the credit to the young people he works with on campus.

Meanwhile, Gaytan, a local attorney who's been practicing law for 25 years and serves on the city council as well, was named Businessman of the Year. Gaytan graduated TLU in 1994, before attending law school at the University of Texas in Austin.

"It is an honor to receive the award, and I am proud to represent the Hispanic community in this manner," says Gaytan. "I am very fortunate to have had parents, grandparents, teachers, and other mentors that built a foundation for me that valued education, proprietorship, and community service. I understand that I am the beneficiary of several generations of trailblazers who created opportunities for me, and I strive to honor their many sacrifices."

TLU congratulates both Silva and Gaytan for their ongoing commitment to the betterment of the community.
