Pennsylvania American Water Announces $6.7 Million Sewer Pipe Upgrade...

SCRANTON, Pa. (May 25, 2022) - Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of a $6.7 million project to replace and upgrade sewer pipe in Dunmore and Scranton. The project includes replacing more than 4,000 feet of pipe and lining more than 19,000 feet of additional pipe.

"These investments in our infrastructure help us provide continued reliable service for our customers," said Jeremy Hull, manager, Scranton wastewater operations. "This project replaces pipe that has been in service for nearly 100 years and is a critical part of our infrastructure."

In Dunmore, the company is replacing nearly 800 feet of existing smaller diameter pipe with new 12-inch PVC pipe along 3rd and Center streets.

In Scranton, more than 4,000 feet of pipe is being replaced along the following streets:

  • Alder Street
  • Beaumont Street
  • Church Street
  • North Irving Avenue
  • Ridge Row
  • Cobb Avenue

Additionally, more than 19,000 feet of pipe is currently being slip-lined, where a thin liner is pulled through the pipe and expanded to attach to the pipe. Pipe lining is taking place on the following streets:

  • New York Street
  • Continental Street
  • Morgan Highway
  • Summit Pointe
  • Little Roaring Brook

"Slip-lining a pipe ultimately restores the pipe to a like-new condition," added Hull. "It adds another 50-75 years of use to the pipe and can be done at half the price of conventional pipe replacement, which requires much more extensive digging and road restoration."

Crews will work weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the pipe installation, including connecting all customer laterals to the new mains by the end of August with final restoration and paving to start in the fall.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Through our continued investments, Pennsylvania American Water's 2021 and 2022 infrastructure upgrade projects will support more than 3,700 jobs each year. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $373 million in 2021 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems.

astewater service to the area will be maintained during construction with little interruption. Once the new sewer main is installed, customer-owned service laterals will need to be connected to the new main. When this work occurs, there might be a short interruption of service. Residents will be notified in advance. For more information, contact Pennsylvania American Water's customer service center at 1-800-565-7292
