Help develop a plan to reduce waste in Berkeley

Attend in-person May 2 or virtual May 15 meetings to share feedback on policies, programs, and infrastructure to help households, businesses, and the City as a whole reduce waste.

Come join us in-person or online to review proposals and share ideas for how the City can improve recycling, reuse, and compost programs to reduce the amount sent to landfills.

These ideas are being compiled into a draft plan, which includes adding more public compost bins next to existing refuse and recycling cans, implementing programs to reuse and repair items, adding locations for hazardous waste drop-off.

The feedback we'll gather at these next two public meetings will help finalize a Zero Waste Strategic Plan, which is expected to come before Council for approval in late summer or early fall.

Once finalized, the plan will serve as a roadmap for the next decade to help the Zero Waste Division lower the amount of landfill waste created in Berkeley.

Come join us in-person on May 2 or online on May 15.

You can reduce landfill waste

You already have the power to reduce waste in your home or business.

Buy only what you need, support local businesses, and consider buying second-hand items when possible. Choose long-lasting products that can be repaired, while avoiding single-use or disposable items. Bring your own reusable containers and bags when you shop.

Follow best practices to correctly recycle and compost your items. Put your recyclable items directly in the bin without bagging them. Compost food scraps instead of throwing them in the trash. Each action we take makes a difference.

The actions of each person, household, or business can have a big impact when taken as a community. Help shape the citywide impact by giving feedback on Zero Waste strategies at our upcoming community meetings, in person on May 2 or virtually on May 15.
