Michael L. Thurmond, author of "James Oglethorpe: Father of Georgia," book talk Tuesday, April 23

History & Geography, Department of Friday April 19, 2024

The Center for Georgia Studies and the Department of History and Geography in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs is honored to present Mr. Michael Thurmond's discussion of his celebrated book "James Oglethorpe: Father of Georgia" on Tuesday, April 23, at 4 p.m. in the COAS Auditorium.

Mr. Thurmond is former member of the Georgia General Assembly and the first African American elected to a statewide office without prior appointment. He also served as superintendent of Schools for Dekalb County. Thurmond was raised as a sharecropper's son in Clarke County, Georgia. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religion from Paine College, and later earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina's School of Law. He also completed the Political Executives program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Dr. Jessica Wallace, associate professor of History, will provide an introduction to the talk.
