Media Alert: Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy to Conduct Oversight Visit to Jaggersfontein Mine in Free State

Parliament, Thursday, 15 September 2022 - The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy will from tomorrow conduct a three-day oversight visit to the Jagersfontein Mine in Free State and to other mines in Gauteng. The committee will, among other things, assess the damage caused by mudslide and flooding in Jaggersfontein following the mine dam burst that took place last Sunday.

Day one, Friday, 16 September, the committee is going to receive briefings from the Free State Disaster Management Centre, the South African Police Service and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

The details of the briefings are as follows:
Venue: Jaggersfontein Library, Jaggersfontein.
Time: 13h30

Day 2, Saturday, 17 September, the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy, the Portfolio Committee on Police and the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will conduct a joint oversight visit to mines that are in Welkom, starting at 09h00 at Matjhabeng Local Municipality.

Day 3, Sunday, 18 September, the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy, the Portfolio Committee on Police as well as the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs will from 9:00 - 13:00 conduct a joint oversight visit to areas where there is illegal mining of gold in Roodepoort, Soweto and Florida in Gauteng. The committees will hold a meeting with the mining houses, people from affected communities and stakeholders after their joint oversight visit

Time: 14:00 - 17:00 - Meeting
