Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic histories added to the new Welsh Curriculum

Following their campaigns for inclusive curriculum frameworks, the NASUWT - The Teachers' Union welcomes the Welsh Government's addition of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic histories and experiences in the school curriculum.
The inclusion of Black, Asian and minority ethnic history will be mandatory from September 2022, subject to Senedd approval.
Wales will be the first UK nation to make the teaching of Black, Asian and minority ethnic history in the UK compulsory.
Dr Patrick Roach, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:
"NASUWT members can be proud that we have successfully achieved an inclusive curriculum, which will finally recognise and celebrate the contributions of all citizens in Wales.
"At our National Conference earlier this year, we called for curriculum frameworks that reflect, respect and value the contributions made by all communities in the United Kingdom. We commend the Welsh Government for being the first U.K. nation to heed our calls and encourages other nations to follow suit.
"Education has vital role to play in teaching future generations about our shared history, promoting equality, inclusion, respect for others and confronting the historical injustices that continue to drive all forms of discrimination and extremism in our society today.
"Black history matters. Every child should have the opportunity to understand and respect their own and each other's histories, cultures and traditions and in Wales, every child will."
Neil Butler, NASUWT National Official Wales, said:
"Wales' diversity is one of our nation's greatest strengths. It's only right that the Welsh curriculum reflects that diversity, so every classroom is inclusive and representative of the students within it."
