Postponed: O Avenue NW Lane Shift

This work has been postponed. On Thursday, August 11, 2022, eastbound traffic on O Avenue NW will be shifted to the center turn lane between Edgewood Road and Hillside Drive for private sewer repair. Work is expected to take one (1) day.

Traffic Control for the St. Jude's Sweet Corn Festival

St. Jude Church will be holding their Sweet Corn Festival beginning Friday, August 12, at 5:00 p.m., until Sunday, August 14, at 6:00 p.m.

For traffic and pedestrian safety purposes, temporary "No Parking" will be enforced on the following streets during the festival, per Municipal Code Sections 61.094 and 61.094A:

  • East side of Julia Anne Drive NW - from 1st Avenue W to Sue Lane NW
  • South side of Sue Lane NW - from Clive Drive NW to Edgewood Road NW
  • East side of Clive Drive W - from 12th Avenue SW to Sue Lane NW
  • North side of 1st Avenue W - from Edgewood Road NW to Julia Anne Drive NW
  • West side of Auburn Drive SW - from 1st Avenue W to 12th Avenue SW
  • South side of Franbrook Terrace NW - from Edgewood Road NW to 1st Avenue W

Mount Vernon Road SE Lane Reduction

Effective Thursday, August 11, eastbound traffic on Mount Vernon Road SE will be reduced to one (1) lane between 18th Street and the south leg of 19th Street for street maintenance. Work is expected to take two (2) days.

6th Street NW/SW Traffic Impacts

6th Street NW

Effective Thursday, August 11, 2022, 6thStreet NW will be closed between 1stAvenue W and A Avenue NW, as the 1stAvenue West Pavement Rehabilitation project continues. 5thStreet NW will re-open before 6thStreet is closed; however, all other current construction set-ups will remain in place on 1stAvenue W.

6th Street SW, south of 76th Avenue
Effective immediately, Monday, August 8, 6th Street SW is open to traffic south of 76th Avenue.

6th Street SW, from Wilson Avenue to 33rd Avenue
Crews today started, Thursday, August 4, placing the first two layers of asphalt on the west side, or southbound lanes, of 6th Street SW from Wilson Avenue to just north of 31st Avenue. To prepare for this placement, wedges are being removed from driveways and side streets, which will result in about a 4-inch bump-up when driving onto properties or streets on the west side of the road. After the second layer is placed, wedges will be replaced until the final asphalt layer is placed in September. Additionally, there will be times when some driveways or side streets will not be accessible. Every effort is being made to notify business owners in advance of closure periods, and to keep the closures as brief as possible.

A single lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times, but lanes will be shifted as required to allow work to proceed. Drivers in the project area are asked to enter driveway or side streets slowly, reduce speed and obey signs and directions from crews. E Avenue NW Lane Reduction

Effective Thursday, August 11, 2022, eastbound traffic on E Avenue NW will be reduced to one lane between 3rd Street and 1st Street for pavement restoration. Work is expected to take two (2) days.

Updated: Cedar Valley Nature Trail Mainenance Scheduled for Saturday

Maintenance work will be performed on a portion of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, between the landfill and Hoover Park, on Saturday, August 13 from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The trail will remain open, but flaggers will provide traffic control and alert riders to work being done in the area. It was originally reported that the trail would be closed; however, it will not.

Edgewood Road SW Lane Reduction

Effective Tuesday, August 9, northbound traffic on Edgewood Road SW will be reduced to one lane between 16th Avenue and 1st Avenue W for utility relocations. Work is expected to take two (2) days.

A Avenue NE Closure

Effective Monday, August 8, A Avenue NE will be closed between 10th Street and 11th Street for skywalk construction. Work is expected to take approximately six (6) months. Detour to be posted.

1st Avenue E Rehabilitation Project to Begin August 8

On Monday, August 8, the 1st Avenue NE/Marion Boulevard from Collins Road to Armar Drive rehabilitation project will begin. This is a joint project between the cities of Cedar Rapids and Marion. Phase 1 will close the inside lanes going both directions, and traffic will be reduced to the outside lanes. Intersecting streets will be reduced to right-in/right-out access. Additionally, traffic signal modifications at 1st Avenue E and Collins Road NE will occur to accommodate the lane closures. Weather permitting, Phase 1 is expected to last 3 weeks. Upon completion of Phase 1, the outside lanes will be closed and traffic will be reduced to the inside lanes. The entire project is expected to be complete by the end of September.

Wilson Avenue SW Closure

Effective Thursday, August 4, Wilson Avenue SW will be closed to traffic between 6th Street and 8th Street for continued roadway improvements. Work is expected to take six (6) days, however, Wilson Avenue will be open to traffic over the upcoming weekend. Traffic to follow posted detour, or seek an alternate route. Work will be complete by end of day Tuesday, August 9.

Lane Reductions on 15th Avenue / 16th Avenue SW Bridge

Effective Monday, July 11, 2022, eastbound and westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane on the 15th Avenue / 16th Avenue SW bridge between 13th Street and 18th Street for bridge deck repair. Work is expected to take two (2) months.

Tower Terrace Road NE Closure

Effective Monday, July 11, 2022, Tower Terrace Road NE will be closed between Center Point Road and Milburn Road for construction of the new I-380 interchange. Work is expected to take approximately four (4) months. Traffic to follow posted detour.

Oakland Road NE Construction Update | August 9
Current traffic impacts:

  • Oakland/Old Marion Road is completely closed between Miami Court and Nelson's Meat Market. We ask residents to park on a nearby side street and walk to your property. The contractor will restore access as soon as possible.
  • Old Marion Road is closed to through traffic between Golf Street and 42nd Street. Access to the businesses in this area is maintained.
  • Through traffic should follow the posted detours at 32nd Street and 42nd Street.

Utility work is complete on Oakland/Old Marion Road from Miami Court to just south of Nelson's Meat Market. The pavement has been removed and has been prepped for paving. Paving is anticipated to begin this week with the mainline pavement first, followed by driveways and sidewalks.

The utility installation crew began installing water main at the opposite (Regent Street) end of the project and are working their way back toward 42nd Street.

Center Point Road NE fro Coe Road to Lincoln Avenue Construction Update | August 9

Center Point Road continues to be reduced to one lane, southbound, with the work occurring in the left lane. F Avenue is closed at Center Point Road on the east side.

Utility work is now progressing from Lincoln Avenue to the railroad tracks. The water main is scheduled to be installed under the railroad tracks the week of August 15th. This work requires coordination with Canadian National Railroad and will include the use of railroad flaggers.

Preparation has begun for paving Center Point Road from Coe Road up to and including F Avenue. An abandoned underground storage tank was discovered under the pavement on F Avenue east of Center Point Road, which stopped work in that area while we waited to hear from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. That tank will be abandoned/removed and then the pavement can be placed.

Ellis Bouleard and 6th Street NW Connector Construction Update | August 9
Traffic impacts:

  • 6th Street NW continues to remain open for two-way traffic flow with delineators in place to direct the route. This traffic pattern will be in place until Thursday, August 11th.
  • On August 11th and 12th, the intersection of 6th Street NW will be closed. During this time, the intersection of 5th Street and 1st Avenue will be available. Local traffic will have access from the north side of 6th Street NW while the intersection of 1st Avenue is closed.

E Avenue and Ellis Boulevard NW

The contractor continues to work at this intersection. Grading work is underway and will be followed by paving.

6th Street NW from 1st Avenue to B Avenue

The contractor is working on water main installation. Traffic is shifted to the west side of the street.

15th Avenue Roadway Improvements Update | July

The south lane is closed at this time. The north lane is open to Traffic, with access from some side streets or alleys still restricted. While the south lane is under construction, the intersection of L Street SW, 3rd Street SW, and J Street SW will remain available for crossing traffic.

Pavement reconstruction is ongoing on 15th Avenue SW. The contractor is working on the last of the underground scope, which is anticipated to be completed by the end of August. Following the completion of the underground work, pavement and site restoration will begin. The project is on schedule to be completed in 2022. Thank you for your patience while we continue construction.

8th Avenue SW from 15th Street to Rockford Road Construction Update | July 19

Installation of new water main and storm sewer on Rockford Road SW from 3rd Avenue to 8th Avenue is nearing completion. When this work is completed, grading and other preparations for new pavement will begin on this portion of Rockford Road. New pavement is expected to be placed starting the first week of August.

Looking ahead, when the new Rockford Road pavement can be opened to traffic work will shift to the intersection of 8th Avenue and Rockford Road. There will be extensive water main and storm sewer work in this intersection, followed by pavement and sidewalk construction. This phase is expected to take 4-6 weeks.

The final phase of the project involves full reconstruction of 8th Avenue SW between 15th Street and the newly reconstructed intersection with Rockford Road. Work on the final phase is expected to be completed by mid-November.

Cottage Grove Avenue and Forest Drive SE Intersection Improvements Update

Effective, Friday, June 24, the intersection of Cottage Grove Avenue and Forest Drive SE is open to traffic. Cottage Grove Avenue is now closed between Forest Drive and Lincolnshire Drive. This closure is expected to be in place until the end of July. Access will be maintained to homeowners. Traffic to follow posted detour, or seek an alternate route.

Blairs Ferry Road NE Lane Reductions

Effective Monday, June 27, lane reductions will occur in both directions on Blairs Ferry Road NE between C Avenue and Addison Avenue for storm sewer improvements associated with the Lindale Trail Phase I construction project. Work is expected to take two (2) months.

1st Avenue W and Wiley Boulevard Intersection Closure

Effective Wednesday, June 8, the intersection of 1st Avenue West and Wiley Boulevard SW will be closed for the construction of a roundabout. Work is expected to take approximately four (4) months. Traffic to follow posted detour, or seek an alternate route.

3rd Avenue and 1st Street SE Intersection Closure

Effective Monday, June 6, the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 1st Street SE will be closed in all directions, as storm sewer improvements continue for permanent flood protection. Repairs are expected to take approximately seven (7) weeks. Traffic to follow posted detours, or seek alternate routes.

12th Avenue SE - Phase II Construction Update | June 14, 2022

The second phase of the 12th Avenue SE project between 16th Street and 17th Street continues. The contractor is currently working on underground utility installation. Once underground utilities are complete the contractor will prepare subgrade and then construct new pavement. New pavement construction is anticipated to begin in July. The second phase of the 12th Avenue SE project is on track to be completed in the 2022 construction season.

Traffic detour routing is signed, please follow the route to Mount Vernon Road SE and 15th Street SE to navigate around construction.

1st Street SE Southbound Closure

Effective immediately, Monday, March 14, 1st Street SE is closed to southbound traffic between 3rd Avenue and 4thAvenue for storm sewer improvements associated with permanent flood control. Work is expected to take approximately three (3) months. The northbound lane is open; southbound traffic to follow posted detour or seek alternate route.

North Side Portion of Cedar Lake Trail Closed | October 26

The southern portion of Cedar Lake Trail was reopened Monday. The northern portion of the trail is now closed and will remain closed for approximately two years for construction of the flood control system. Click map showing closed section (red) and open section (green).
