ABFA APPLAUDS DOE AND USDA BIOFUELS REPORTS

WASHINGTON, DC - Michael McAdams, President of the Advanced Biofuels Association (ABFA), issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) releasing the 2023 Billion-Ton Report (BT23) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) releasing the Plan to Enable the Bioeconomy in America: Building a Resilient Biomass Supply report.

"The Advanced Biofuels Association applauds the Biden Administration for release of the Department of Energy's 2023 Billion-Ton Report and the Department of Agriculture's Plan to Enable the Bioeconomy in America: Building a Resilient Biomass Supply reports. These Agencies have clearly signaled the potential the advanced biofuels industry has to meaningfully decarbonize the U.S. transportation fuel supply, and ABFA encourages Congress and the Administration to align federal policy to realize this full potential.

"The BT23 report found that the U.S. could sustainably triple its biomass production to more than 1 billion tons per year, which would meet more than 100% of the country's need for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and allow the aviation industry to be completely decarbonized. The USDA's report outlines a plan to boost biomass supply chain resiliency. ABFA has long argued that the federal government has historically undervalued biofuel production capacity, most recently when determining the 2023 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Hopefully the findings of these reports will convince policymakers of the important role the low carbon fuel industry can play in reducing carbon emissions.

"With emissions on the rise the biofuels industry is standing at the ready to accelerate reductions in global emissions immediately. As a drop-in fuel, advanced biofuels are already in use across existing infrastructure. Only with an all-of-the-above climate strategy can we make real progress in fighting climate change.

"These reports are an important acknowledgement of the advanced biofuels industry's full potential. However, it must be followed by swift action and concrete policy support to reach the administration's ambitious climate goals."
