The creation of an innovative foundry and the development of a rhenium-free high-heat-resistant nickel alloy were among the best projects in the Aircraft Builder of the Year competition. These projects have been successfully implemented by UEC-Saturn PJSC (a part of the United Engine Corporation of Rostec).
Rybinsk UEC enterprise became a laureate of the competition in the nomination 'Best innovative project' and a diploma winner - 'For the creation of a new technology.'
The 2019 awards ceremony was held on July 19 in Moscow, at the Fourth Eurasian Aerospace Congress, as part of the MAKS-2021 business program.
'The creation of an innovative foundry allowed UEC to become the leader of the Russian Federation in the manufacture of castings of gas turbine engine blades for various purposes. The project increases the share of civilian products in the product portfolio, forms an important direction for the commercial development of the enterprise, - said Viktor Polyakov, Deputy General Director - Managing Director of UEC-Saturn PJSC. - The second project is a materials science project that is not typical of our activity. But, being a developer of promising engines and realizing that where there are design bureaus, there should be new promising technologies and materials, we took up this direction. Using our unique technical and research base, we were able to get a decent result.'
The largest foundry production complex in Russia was put into operation at PJSC UEC-Saturn in December 2019. It is designed for the manufacture of blades - one of the most knowledge-intensive and complex-to-manufacture components for gas turbine engines. The innovative foundry has a closed technological cycle, equipped with unique technological equipment for single crystal casting and directional solidification casting. Automated installations, robotic complexes, automated software products for production planning and quality control of manufactured products have been introduced here. All technical solutions are aimed at meeting the high requirements for cast billets. The competencies of PJSC 'UEC-Saturn' in the field of precision casting of blades are in demand in the Russian and international markets.
The development of a rhenium-free high-heat-resistant nickel alloy for single crystal turbine blades will increase the competitiveness of both existing models of aircraft engines during modernization and newly developed products. The new alloy has been developed, patented and ready for certification. The developers were able to select the chemical composition of the alloy without the use of expensive rare earth metals rhenium and ruthenium, which reduced the cost of its components by 3.5 times. The properties of the new material make it possible to use it in a wider temperature range and to increase the efficiency of the gas turbine engine. The company's specialists not only developed a new material, but also mastered the full industrial technological chain from alloy production to the manufacture of single-crystal high-pressure turbine blades using it.
The Aircraft Builder of the Year competition has been held since 2011. The founders of the competition are the Union of Russian Aircraft Manufacturers, JSC UEC, PJSC UAC, JSC Russian Helicopters, FSUE 'TsAGI named after Professor N.Ye. Zhukovsky ', JSCB 'Novikombank'.
