Inhofe Condemns Release of Guantanamo Bay Detainee to Afghanistan

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today issuedthe following statement on reports that the Biden administration released Guantanamo Bay detainee Assadullah Haroon Gul to Afghanistan:

"This morning, the Biden administration sent a very dangerous person back to the Taliban, which naturally welcomed him with open arms. President Biden's chaotic, hasty, and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan last August, which enabled the Taliban's takeover and reduced our ability to track the terrorist groups responsible for the 9/11 attacks, substantially increased the threat to our homeland. By returning this Guantanamo detainee to the Taliban, President Biden is now repopulating the terrorists' ranks. Congress must act quickly to prevent the Biden administration from acting so recklessly again in the future, because the administration's track record is clear and dangerous.

"As ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will be asking that the committee hold additional hearings on Afghanistan and these serious challenges as soon as we can."
