Statement from the Texas Pediatric Society, the Texas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Regarding the Events of May 24, 2022
As a society of pediatricians, residents, medical students, and committed advocates dedicated to the care and well-being of Texas children, we grieve with those who lost loved ones on Tuesday in the tragic school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. We stand with the families, our fellow physicians and healthcare providers, and the entire community as we mourn this heartbreaking tragedy. We also remember those who lost their lives in past school and community shootings, including those in the Texas communities of Sutherland Springs, Santa Fe, Midland-Odessa, and El Paso.
This senseless tragedy in Uvalde reflects the ever-present and increasing public health crisis in Texas, with children being exposed to violence in the places where they should feel the safest. All children deserve to feel and be safe where they live, learn, play, and pray.
We must address firearm violence with public health solutions. We call on the Governor and the Texas Legislature to protect our children by taking immediate action to implement new common-sense firearm injury prevention policies and improve upon current firearm safety policies. No more Texas children should die while we wait for change.
Our hearts and prayers are with the Uvalde community as we continue to stand committed to be a voice for children and meaningful policy changes.
