The opening ceremony of the joint exercise Peace Mission – 2021 was held at the training ground near Orenburg

The opening ceremony of the joint military anti-terrorist command and staff exercise of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states Peace Mission-2021 was held at the Donguz training ground in the Orenburg region.

At the beginning of the event, the commander of the coalition group of troops (forces), Lieutenant General Yevgeny Poplavsky, reported to the commander of the Central Military District (CMD), Colonel-General Alexander Lapin about the readiness of the participants for a joint exercise.

"Fellow soldiers, sergeants and officers! Battle friends! I am sincerely glad to welcome you on Russian soil, on the territory of the Central Military District! In the Central Asian region, we are seeing a significant aggravation of the situation. The military-political situation around our states is becoming increasingly tense.

The completion of the US military operation in Afghanistan has led to a fast increase in the terrorist threat in our common Eurasian space. Against the background of the Taliban's seizure of power in Afghanistan, the strengthening of the positions of ISIS and other international terrorist organizations is of particular concern, which entails the threat of their infiltration into the border areas of our countries.

Taking into account the dynamics of the situation, the alliance is becoming more and more significant, and we need not just to maintain current interaction, but also its consistent increase in the field of military relations.

That is why a characteristic feature of the Peace Mission-2021 will be its holding in the year of the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

More than five thousand servicemen of nine states in a single formation, shoulder to shoulder, will demonstrate their readiness for joint actions to defeat large gangs and neutralize terrorist threats.

For the first time, the military contingent of the Republic of Belarus is taking part in the exercise, and we are glad to welcome it.

During the exercise created by the joint control system, we are testing new ways of joint combat operations, taking into account the development of modern weapons and tactics of terrorist groups.

The joint anti-terrorist exercise will not only increase the level of coordination of units and strengthen the combat community, but also demonstrate to the entire world community the unity of views of the leadership of our states on the emerging threats.

The exercise will be held in two stages, and during the active phase, the coalition group of troops will work out practical actions for five operational episodes.

I am sure that thanks to our joint efforts, we will fulfill the tasks set. I wish success to all participants of the exercise!", Colonel-General Alexander Lapin said at a meeting dedicated to the beginning of the exercise.

After the performance of the national anthems of the participating countries of the exercise, the heads of foreign military contingents made a welcoming speech. They thanked the commander of the Central Military District for the warm welcome and the organization of accommodation in the field camp.

The event ended with a solemn march of the participants of the exercise consisting of more than 20 parade crews. The musical accompaniment of the opening ceremony was provided by the consolidated military orchestra of the Central Military District consisting of about 300 military personnel under the direction of the head of the military orchestra service of the Central Military District headquarters, Colonel Sergei Aleev.

The joint military anti-terrorist command and staff exercise of the armed forces of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states Peace Mission-2021 is held from September 20 to 24, 2021 at the Donguz training ground in the Orenburg region.

The main objectives of the exercise are to improve the coherence of the governing bodies of the coalition group of troops in the preparation and conduct of a joint anti-terrorist operation, exchange experience in countering terrorism, as well as mastering the basic tactical techniques and methods of action of the forces (troops) under the leadership of the joint military administration body.

About 5.5 thousand servicemen and more than 1.2 thousand units of weapons, military and special equipment are involved in practical actions.

The joint anti-terrorist exercises of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Peace Mission have been held every two years since the organization was established in 2001. The first of them took place in August 2003 on the territory of Kazakhstan and China.
