Niles Mayor George D. Alpogianis Responds to Highland Park Tragedy

It saddens us to know that our neighbors in Highland Park have gone through such a tragic event, especially on a day that is so important for our democracy, and is supposed to be about coming together as a community and remembering our freedoms. We were fortunate in Niles to be able to have a safe celebration with our citizens before the incident in Highland Park happened, but by the time our parade was ending, the news started breaking about what had happened, placing an undeniable damper on the day's events.

Society's moving in a direction that's instilling more and more fear. We need to stick together, and make sure that our children don't grow up in a society based on fear. We also need to make sure justice prevails, and that the perpetrator of these actions ends up behind bars and stays there. Situations like this also demonstrate the importance of continuing to support mental health and social services in our community, which we are proud to prioritize in Niles.
