Reducing Hunger and Food Waste in our Communities

Imagine a world where people don't go hungry. A place where everyone has equal access to healthy, nutritious food. A world where there's no food waste and therefore, no additional greenhouse gas emissions as a result. At Trane Technologies, not only do we think this world is possible, our bold 2030 sustainability commitments push us to challenge current norms in favor of realizing a new, better world.

The United Nations estimates that one-third of all food produced for human consumption globally is either lost or wasted- and this wastage has far-reaching impacts on our environment and communities around the world. Download and read the food wastage footprint summary report. Food loss and waste accounts for nearly 8% of planet-warming greenhouse gases. Furthermore, even though we produce enough food to feed everyone on earth, nearly 795 million people are undernourished globally.

One of the greatest challenges in getting food to the millions of people around the world who don't have enough is refrigerated transport. Through our Thermo King business, we use our expertise and innovative products to move fresh, healthy food to where it's needed most.

Making an Impact

Recognizing that transport refrigeration plays a critical role in eliminating food waste and increasing food stability, we launched the We Move Food Program in 2017. We Move Food provides support to hunger relief organizations globally through direct grants, special pricing on transport refrigeration products and maintenance, access to training and expertise, and volunteerism. Since its launch, the program has enabled more than 35 food banks to get fresh food to the people who need it most.

'Everybody always thinks when they hear about food banks that we move boxes and cans, and that's true, but it might surprise folks to know that over half of what we move at Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina is produce, meat and dairy. Without refrigerated trucks and units like the ones furnished by Thermo King, we couldn't keep that produce, and that meat, and that milk, and those eggs cold and get them to the eventual destination - which is to help a family or a senior in need.'

-Kay Carter, CEO Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina

We Move Food was designed in partnership with Feeding America to support their network of 200+ food banks. In just three years, Thermo King team members and dealers in more than 30 cities have volunteered with mobile food pantries and food banks, shared their expertise and facilitated in-kind giving through the special pricing program. Our primary goals are to help decrease the number of food deserts around the world, and to fund more mobile food pantries to improve fresh food transport. To date, the We Move Food program has donated more than $546,000 in direct grants to hunger relief organizations, which equates to nearly 5.5 million meals provided to people in need.

Advancing nutrition is one of the foundational pillars of our work to establish healthy and happy communities.
