Projections from UT Southwestern on future COVID-19 hospitalizations - January 19

Portions of January 19 commentary

"The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 in North Texas has exceeded all prior peaks, and hospitalizations across North Texas are near record levels. Hospitalizations in Dallas and Tarrant Counties are projected to continue to increase in the near term, putting a severe strain on local health systems and leading to increased wait times in emergency rooms across the region. New cases and new hospitalizations will likely reach their peak before the end of January, though the recent shift to older age groups may lead to a slower decline in hospitalizations than seen in prior waves."

"Levels of local transmission are at the highest seen since the beginning of the pandemic and still increasing. There is a high likelihood of expsoure at any large gathering because of the prevelance and high transmissibility of the Omicron variant, and self-isolation for 3-5 days and testing are recommended for those who attend such gatherings. Onward transmission may be possible as soon as 36 hours after exposure."

This CDC guidance describes what activities may be safely resumed by fully vaccinated persons. It also indicates that additional precautions are recommended in areas of high or substantial spread, especially the highly infectious variants occurring in North Texas.

The color-coded guidance system was put together under the leadership of the Public Health Committee and the DCHHS Department to provide specific direction to Dallas County residents. Residents are urged to strictly follow the protective measures of each color to maintain their own health and avoid a resurgence of the epidemic that would cause greater harm to individuals, businesses, and communities.
