San Diego Attorney Dick Semerdjian to receive James K. Carroll Leadership Award from American Bar Association

WASHINGTON, July 26, 2016 - The American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section will honor San Diego attorney Dick A. Semerdjian with its James K. Carroll Leadership Award, which honors members who have shown outstanding leadership qualities and service to the section.

The award will be presented to Semerdjian during the TIPS James K. Carroll Leadership and Awards Dinner on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square.

'As a past section chair, Dick A. Semerdjian has shown a lifetime of outstanding leadership, decades of dedicated service and endless support to our organization,' said G. Glennon Troublefield, chair of the ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. 'Dick is a valuable mentor to many of our section leaders today and we, as a section, are grateful for the path he has paved.'

Semerdjian has been a member of the ABA since 1986, when he began practicing law. In 1994, he was appointed by the State Bar of California to the ABA House of Delegates, where he served for nine years and gained insight into the association's policy and legislative arm.

Semerdjian's involvment in TIPS includes serving as a council member and as chair of the Business Litigation Committee. He was a faculty member for the TIPS-American Board of Trial Advocates National Trial Academy in Reno, Nev. In 2009 and 2012, he addressed the TIPS International Law Committee in Tsinghua University and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in Beijing on legal challenges for Chinese companies doing business in the U.S. and on litigation in America. Since 2013, he has served as chair and a member of the ABA Commission on the American Jury Project.

Semerdjian serves on the Judicial Nominations and Evaluation Committee of the Lawyers Club of San Diego. He has also served in various positions with the San Diego County Bar Association including the board of governors and the Client Assistance and Arbitration/Client Relations and Bench and Bar committees. He is a member of the State Bar of California, San Diego Trial Lawyers Association (Consumer Attorneys of San Diego), San Diego Defense Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, Association of Business Trial Lawyers and Consumer Attorneys of California.

Semerdjian earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1985 and his B.A. from the University of California at San Diego in 1981. He is licensed to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and all California and federal courts, including Northern, Central, Eastern and Southern Federal District Courts.
