Extraordinary Waseca nurse recognized with DAISY award

WASECA, Minn. ― Krystal Malis, a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Waseca, is being honored with The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses.

Mayo Clinic Health System partners with The DAISY Foundation on the program that honors registered and licensed practical nurses working at Mayo Clinic Health System facilities in the Southwest Minnesota region. The DAISY Award is a prestigious program used by more than 5,000 health care facilities and schools worldwide to recognize nurses who demonstrate extraordinary service and compassion.

Nurses are nominated for The DAISY Award by patients, family members, visitors, physicians, nursing colleagues or allied health staff members who experience or observe extraordinary care and compassion being provided by the nurse. A selection committee reviews nominations for nurses at Mayo Clinic Health System's Southwest Minnesota locations and selects DAISY Award winners every quarter. Since the program launched in April 2022, this is the first time a DAISY Award has been given in Waseca.

"I am excited to recognize Krystal with The DAISY Award," says Lisa McConnell, chief nursing officer, Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota. "She is the first nurse at our Waseca hospital to receive the award. Krystal was nominated by a team member who recognizes 'her ability to give each individual patient and family member the specific care and compassion they need during their time in the Emergency Department.' I sincerely appreciate the exceptional care Krystal provides our patients."

If you know an extraordinary nurse who works at a Mayo Clinic Health System in a Southwest Minnesota location, you can nominate him or her for The DAISY Award by completing the online nomination form.

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Barnes died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, an uncommon auto-immune disease.

The care that Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired them to create The DAISY Award to thank nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Learn more at daisyfoundation.org.
