Sun Herald and 'Out Here in America' Podcast Host 'One Night Out'

SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) and the team behind the (Biloxi) Sun Herald's critically acclaimed podcast, Out Here in America, will host 'One Night Out' at the Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs, Miss. on Sunday, July 23.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes a screening of the award-winning documentary 'The Freedom to Marry,' which chronicles the landmark 2015 Supreme Court case guaranteeing marriage equality in all 50 states. Space is limited. Tickets can be purchased here.

With the national focus on Mississippi's 'religious freedom' law and LGBTQ rights in the Deep South, Evan Wolfson, founder of the Freedom to Marry advocacy team and star of the film, and the movie's director, Eddie Rosenstein, will join 'Out Here in America' host Justin Mitchell for a live taping of the podcast, and audience Q&A following the screening.

'We should not fear our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. We should not damn them. And we should not offer protection to those who would discriminate against them any more than we would protect those who would discriminate based on race, or gender or age,' the Sun Herald editorial board wrote in the wake of the recent legal decision that allows Mississippians to refuse marriage-related services to LGBTQ couples. 'Our leaders should unite us in pursuit of the common goal of a better life. We always pull for Mississippi to win. In this instance, we hope our leaders lose.'

'Out Here in America,' named an Apple Podcasts 'New & Noteworthy' show, features military veterans, religious leaders, celebrities and other guests discussing their LGBTQ experiences in the historically conservative, traditionally religious heartland and deep south. New episodes are released every Monday on Apple Podcasts, Google Play and Stitcher.
