Sydney Landscape Code wins major award

The City of Sydney scooped up three major accolades at this year's NSW Landscape Architecture Awards, hosted by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.

The City's Sydney Landscape Code, a landscape study for Green Square and the Hyde Park Pool of Reflection upgrade were all honoured in the annual awards.

The three projects were selected from the largest pool of entries the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects has received in the awards' history.

'We are absolutely committed to high quality planning and development, not just in our built form but in our parks, playgrounds and streetscapes across the city,' Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

'Design excellence takes boldness and a willingness to think creatively with a focus on our city communities.

'These awards are testament to our brilliant staff, our partners and the exciting work we're doing to create a city that works well and is beautiful.'

In the Research, Policy and Communications category, the City of Sydney and OCULUS were awarded for the Sydney Landscape Code.

Adopted by Council in November 2016, the Sydney Landscape Code provides guidance on the creation of high quality, sustainable landscape spaces within private developments.

The policy was awarded for its thorough research and attention to detail. The jury commented 'The Sydney Landscape Code is detailed and illustrated to perfection. The document has been thoroughly researched and set out with intelligence and skill.'

In the Cultural Heritage category, the City of Sydney and Turf Design Studio and Environmental Partnership were awarded for the Hyde Park Pool of Reflection upgrade.

'Within Australia's oldest park, the culturally and historically significant Pool of Reflection is a rare space for quiet reflection to remember those who have lost their lives in the service of our country,' the Lord Mayor said.

'Recent works on the Pool of Reflection have resulted in high quality finishes, upgrades to pavements and furniture and tree plantings, while being sympathetic to the site's heritage.'

The jury noted the design outcome demonstrated that innovation does not require a departure from past forms.

Gallagher Studio and the City of Sydney received the Landscape Planning award for a landscape quality study at Green Square.

The City of Sydney commissioned Gallagher studio to study the quality of the landscape in the Green Square urban renewal area and explore methods to enhance it.

The study was awarded for its comprehensive analysis, robust proposition and clear graphics to clearly communicate the methods for improving the future amenity of Green Square.
