Hospital and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue honor firefighter/paramedic who donated organs

Jared Huprich was known for his big smile and outgoing personality. He was a Hillsborough County firefighter and paramedic for 12 years following his service in the United States Air Force. He frequented HCA Florida Brandon Hospital Emergency Department as he brought patients to the hospital during their time of need. In May of 2023, Jared was in a tragic accident that he would never recover from. But before that accident, Jared made the selfless decision to give life to others if his life were unable to continue on its own. A few days after the accident, Jared passed, but not before his organs were able to save several people. On April 29 at 10:30 am, the Brandon Hospital and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue teams will combine to share Jared's story and raise the Donate Life flag in honor of Jared's gift to others and Donate Life Month.

"When Jared walked in a room, everyone knew it. He always had such a positive attitude," said Jerrod Hayes, Huprich's good friend and fellow firefighter. "He had heart and dedication. Now, his heart beats for someone else. He lives on through the people he saved and his story will never be forgotten. I am honored to share his story for Donate Life Month."

"The selflessness of organ donation is profound. For an individual and a family to choose to be an organ donor is giving life - our greatest gift," said Christine Van Cott, CMO at Brandon Hospital. "The gift of an organ changes lives, families and generations. It gives a second chance at life to someone who may not be here without it enabling memories that will last for generations. It's powerful, it's moving and I am grateful for that gift anytime we are able to bear witness to it at our hospital and beyond."

Local performer and entertainer, Krystle Pitts, will also share her story at the flag raising. Kystle received a life-saving kidney donation in 2020- during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She shares her testimony and volunteers with LifeLink to encourage the community to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

Speaking at the flag raising:

Nicole Knight, Brandon Hospital ICU Manager

Jerrod Hayes, friend and former colleague of Jared Huprich, lifesaving organ donor

Krystle Pitts, organ donor recipient

Cassady Henshaw, LifeLink

Media are invited to attend this moving flag raising ceremony alongside the healthcare workers and firefighters who knew Jared and praise him for the hero he was in life that he continues to be after his death.
