Getty Images and Dove Announce Winners of #ShowUs Leadership Grant and Open New Grant

- $10,000 awarded to photographers exploring Matriarchal Leadership and Post-Communist Identity of Eastern European Women
- Two grants of $5,000 for submissions on the theme 'Body Positivity' - open from today
London - September 16, 2021: Getty Images, a world leader in visual communications, in partnership with Dove, has today announced the winners of the #ShowUs Leadership Grant, awarding two photographers US$5,000 each to pursue stories of social significance. The #ShowUs Grant is dedicated to promoting the work of emerging women, femmes and non-binary commercial photographers and filmmakers from around the world who are using their talents to create inclusive visual stories depicting authentic representations of women, femmes and non-binary individuals and communities.
Submitting against the brief to create inclusive visual stories on the theme 'Leadership', the winners are:
- Zula Rabikowska is a Polish photographer who is based between London and Kraków. Zula's winning project focuses on contemporary gender identity in Central and Eastern Europe. She will travel to countries along the former Iron Curtain border (separating the former Soviet bloc from Western Europe from 1945 - 1991) and meet with women, non-binary and trans people to understand and document how post-communism shapes gender identity. In the project, Zula will examine sexist stereotypes, restrictive beauty standards and the impact of religion and politics on contemporary expression of gender in the region.
Zula said on winning the grant: 'I am honoured to have been selected as one of the #ShowUs Leadership winners. The grant will enable me to work on a long-term documentary project, which will help me challenge stereotypes related to Central and Eastern Europe. The grant is an incredible opportunity, which will allow me to make new work, develop my career, and contribute to the larger debate regarding issues of borders, womanhood and gender.'
- Alex Sanchez is a documentary photographer and filmmaker born and raised in Miami, Florida. Alex's winning project will investigate the internal dynamics of six families and the leadership roles of the mothers within them. Focusing on families from different nationalities, religious, cultural, and non-traditional backgrounds and households, Alex will ask the question 'what does motherhood look like'? Confronting societal norms and representations of motherhood, Alex will build upon existing relationships with families in Palestine, Cambodia, Florida, Nicaragua, Laos and Egypt to capture the intersection of cultural identity, expectation, and motherhood.
Alex said on winning the grant: 'This grant will help me finish this project and create work that hopefully sheds even a bit of light on the essence of motherhood. I can't think of a better project to be working on in this time of change in our world. Our leaders are more commonly becoming women and those women are mothers in its various forms. The traditional role of what a matriarch is has changed and I'm fascinated to see where it goes in the future.'
Two new grants now open for applications
Getty Images, in partnership with Dove, today launches the next #ShowUs Grant, offering two $5,000 grants to emerging commercial photographers or filmmakers who submit against the brief of creating inclusive visual stories on the theme 'Body Positivity'.
Judges will be looking for submissions which shatter stereotypes and conventions via Body Positivity - encouraging photographers and filmmakers to celebrate the unique journeys of what it means to exist as women, femmes and non-binary people in the world. This grant wishes to honour the full spectrum of diverse experiences - from thriving in one's body, to having a more challenging relationship to it - all experiences are valid, welcome, and appreciated. Judges will give particular consideration to photographers and filmmakers who are depicting authentic stories of women, femmes and non-binary individuals in their local communities.
Submissions will be judged by a prestigious panel of creatives including:
- Imogen-Blue Hinojosa - Artist and filmmaker
-Sarah Waiswa - Award-winning photographer and founder of African Women in Photography
-Shina Peng - Photographer
-Leandro Barreto - Global Vice President, Dove
-Reya Sehgal- Creative Insights Manager, Getty Images
Applications will be accepted until Sunday October 24, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. EST. Entrants can apply online at https://grants.gettyimages.com/en/grants/showus-grant-body-positivity
In addition to the financial prize, the successful recipients will also be invited to license their award-winning content through gettyimages.com and iStock.com at a 100% royalty rate for content created within their proposed project. Recipients will also receive mentoring support and guidance.
The grant is part of Getty Images' ongoing commitment to promoting diversity within creative commercial content and elevating the work and the voices of women, femme and non-binary photographers and filmmakers as championed with Project #ShowUs. Created in partnership with Dove, the Project #ShowUs collection is a global library of images created by women, femme and non-binary individuals devoted to shattering beauty stereotypes around the world.
The Getty Images #ShowUs Grant is part of Getty Images' wider grants program, which since its inception has donated over US$1.8 million to photographers and filmmakers around the world.
