LANSING - The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce the release of the latest #proudMIeducator video, featuring Janine Scott, the

2020-21 Region 10 Teacher of the Year, who shares her journey in becoming an educator.

The video can be viewed at: #proudMIeducator: Janine Scott, 2020-21 Michigan Region 10 Teacher of the Year.

"It is important for us to continue highlighting the voices of educators," said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. "The ProudMIeducator campaign is one way we honor the hard work of passionate educators, such as Janine Scott, and we hope that others will consider a career in education after listening to her story."

Scott grew up in Lansing and initially became an engineer after college prior to her teaching as a second career. She encourages all her students to consider a career in teaching, and shares some of the challenges that come with being a woman of color teaching mathematics.

The Michigan Department of Education is helping drive "Grow Your Own" initiatives in local school districts across the state to help inspire students and other district employees to become proud Michigan educators.

Increasing the number of certified teachers, especially in areas of shortage, is one of the eight goals of Michigan's strategic education plan.

Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator series has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found on the MDE YouTube Page.
