TRANSPORT AND OFFSHORE Union RMT today responded to the Government's commitment to build back better with apprentices after Covid-19.
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said;
'Instead of listening to the lobbying of crewing agents represented on the Maritime Skills Commission, the Government needs to institute a mass programme of Rating recruitment, using the apprenticeship standards for deck, engine and catering agreed with trade unions, maritime colleges and industry on the Maritime Trailblazer Working Group.
'A failure to do so will harm green job creation in the renewable energy supply chain, as well as decimate seafarer employment in port communities like Dover, Hull and Holyhead where hundreds of seafarer jobs have been lost already during the pandemic, including apprentices.'
