Studio HENK and Renewi launch limited-edition waste wood table

Dutch design brand Studio HENK and leading waste-to-product company Renewi have joined forces to create a unique limited-edition table out of waste wood. The two companies combined their expertise to create a 100% recycled coniferous wood Slot Dining Table, thereby working together towards a more sustainable future.

Leading the way

Two industry pioneers come together with a greater goal. Striving to be the most recognised waste-to-product company, Renewi focuses exclusively on extracting value from waste rather than on its disposal through mass-burn incineration or landfill. Taking circular design to heart, Studio HENK strives to revolutionise the furniture industry from within to become entirely zero waste. The partnership came about through their mutual sustainable ambitions and is a significant next step in both companies' journeys towards a more sustainable future.

In developing the table, Renewi researched how they could best retrieve waste wood from the waste stream. This required removing wooden beams from waste and extracting nails and screws. Studio HENK focused its efforts on making this technique scalable for larger productions. The reclaimed wood was then sawed in the required dimensions and prepared for production, in this case, a dining table.

Bert-Jan Westerik, Commercial Director at Renewi Netherlands: "At Renewi, we convert as many waste streams as we can into secondary raw materials daily. Together with partners in the chain like Studio HENK, we can successfully use these to create new products. Collaboration is the key word here, and both organisations attach great importance to the transition to a circular economy. That's why it's almost a given that this wood gets a second life. With our combined knowledge and experience, we can offer sustainable and practical recycling solutions. In this way, we jointly contribute to a cleaner, circular world where waste no longer exists."

Design furniture with purpose

The 100% recycled coniferous wood Slot Dining Table comes after a series of moves taken by Studio HENK to become a more sustainable furniture brand. Studio HENK's first table was created using reclaimed wood from old Amsterdam canal houses that were found on the street. In September 2020, Studio HENK made a biodegradable collection out of recycled materials - the Amoeba Collection uses LivingBoard, a material made of recycled FSC wood chips. Since October 2020, all the wood used in the production of Studio HENK's dining tables, coffee tables, dining benches, cabinets, and dressers is FSC or PEFC certified. The brand more recently developed circular design principles for future collections and is striving to become a B Corp certified company.

Corine de Bruijne, Head of Sustainability at Studio HENK: "We strongly believe in knowledge sharing and are always looking for partnerships that can bring about innovation in production processes or materials. This partnership is an exciting step into realising a zero-waste furniture industry."

The Slot Dining Table

The Slot Dining Table is one of Studio HENK's most popular designs and a perfect fit for this collaboration with its flat oval shape and subtle round forms. Using recycled wood in creating this table has not taken away from the simplicity and refined look characteristic of Studio HENK. The waste wood table is available in natural light and black lacquer and six sizes ranging from two to three metres in length. Studio HENK and Renewi are looking into how this production method can be applied to other pieces in Studio HENK's collection in the future.

The limited-edition 100% recycled coniferous wood Slot Dining Table is available from €2219 and is exclusively for sale in Studio HENK stores in the Netherlands and Belgium from this weekend, Saturday 8 July.
