By: Hunter McKayKENNESAW, Ga- Kennesaw State Director of Track and Field and Cross Country announced the hiring of and to his staff on Tuesday.
'With the additions of Coach Coelho and Coach Martin our staff is complete,' McDaniel said. 'This is an exciting time to be an Owl.'
Coelho will coach the combined eventers while Martin will work with the sprints, hurdles and relay groups.
Coelho arrives from the University of Central Florida where she spent the 2018-19 season as a volunteer assistant. At UCF, she coached Kayla Pritchett to a fourth place finish in the heptathlon. She also assisted in the development of the 4x100m relay team that won the AAC Outdoor Title and earned Second Team All-American status after finishing 14th at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. She also assisted in the development of five athletes who qualified for the East preliminary round of the NCAA Championships.
'Rachael is a talented young coach who comes to us from Central Florida,' McDaniel said. 'She has the ability to coach a lot of areas and we are all happy to have her on board.'
Prior to UCF, she spent two years as the Head Coach and Director of Track and Field at Lake Highland Preparatory School. She guided LHPS to three district championships and four regional championships. 29 of her athletes qualified for the FHSA State Championships.
She was a volunteer assistant coach at UCF during the 2015-16 season helping the Knights to a third place finish at the AAC Indoor Championships and a runner-up finish at the AAC Outdoor Championships.
Coelho competed as a combined eventer at the University of South Florida from 2010-15. She ranks third in program history in the pentathlon and fifth in the heptathlon. She graduated from USF with a degree in health sciences and physical education with a specialization in exercise science.
Martin comes to KSU from Tiffin University where he served as an assistant coach working with the sprints, hurdles and relays. Last season, Martin coached the Division II National Champion in the 60m, 100m and the 4x100m relay. His 60m and 100m dash group ranked first in the USTFCCA Event Squad Rankings. During the 2017-18 season Martin's athletes finished runner-up in the 60m and 100m dash at the Division II National Championships. Under Martin's watch his athletes set four school record and a pair of GLIAC Conference records.
'Dennis has a great deal of success at the national level and I can't wait to see what he brings to this group of athletes,' McDaniel said.
Martin was an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State for two seasons where his athletes set three school records.
Martin began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at the University of North Florida during the 2014-15 season working with the sprints hurdles and relay teams.
Martin competed at the University of Florida from 2005-2009 where he was three-time All-American. He was on the Gators 4x100m relay squad that won the National Championship in 2009.
He received his degree in Anthropology from Florida in 2010.
