SAN ANTONIO (January 17, 2022) - District 3 Councilwoman teamed up with 2014-2016 Poet Laureate, San Antonio, 2016 Poet Laureate, State of Texas, Laurie Ann Guerrero, to reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy and service in midst of a global pandemic. Today, as we continue to navigate a changing world, each of us affected in various ways, we at District 3, the South and Southeast side of San Antonio, want to encourage you to remain steadfast in your commitment to equality, inclusion, and justice. Though we are disappointed that we will not be able to march together this year-a symbolic gesture of our unity, which honors the generations who marched before us and who demonstrated a peace-loving path upon which we work to help our community progress and thrive-we will continue in our commitment to cultivating an open and inclusive dialogue with all in our beloved city.
This is as important today as it was 59 years ago when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered the speech that changed the hearts of the millions of individuals who make up the communities of our nation. Let us not be discouraged. The movement continues throughout the year, every day, as it has continued throughout all the years, every year. What we do in our homes, in our schools, in our neighborhoods is as important as our collective voices marching together, and it is the foundation we need to manifest the dream Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. courageously called into action.
Right now, the restrictions with which we must abide to protect ourselves and each other are imperative so that we can soon reconvene to continue our collective work. Our hope is that as we honor Dr. MLK, Jr. and his dream for our communities individually, we do so firmly united in our efforts toward peace and justice and for the sake of the city we all love.
