TechNet Submits Comments to the FTC on its Proposed Rule on Impersonations

Washington, D.C. - TechNet, the national, bipartisan network of innovation economy CEOs and senior executives, submitted comments to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on its proposal to amend its Impersonation Rule. The following can be attributed to TechNet President and CEO Linda Moore:

"When guided by ethics, transparency, and fairness, responsible AI can spark creativity and help usher in a more prosperous future. However, recognizing and addressing its genuine risks is critical. By addressing these concerns head-on, we can ensure we're making the most of its benefits for all Americans.

"As new AI regulations are considered, it is important to note that existing rules, regulations, and laws that prohibit unlawful behavior still apply to AI. At the same time, the technology industry is committed to keeping its services safe and has deployed a variety of tools, including the removal of content, that prevent bad actors from deceiving consumers.

"While we appreciate the FTC's efforts to prevent impersonation of individuals, a goal we share, the proposed rule is overly broad and could result in unintended consequences that hinder innovation and create confusion with existing laws, including Section 230. A more tailored rule would more effectively prevent impersonations of individuals, allow innovation to flourish, and encourage companies to implement strong compliance programs."
