Maloney Votes to Pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act, Comprehensive Legislation to Protect Voting Rights and Reform Democracy

Washington, D.C. - Today, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) voted to pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act, the most significant voting rights and democracy reform legislation in more than half a century.

'New Yorkers want big money out of politics, they want their elected officials to be held accountable, and they want to know that their constitutional right to vote is protected,' said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. 'The For the People Act is about meeting the moment in America. We're going to bring integrity back to Washington, restore the public's trust in their government, and return us to the People's House. I'm proud to help pass this bill to put Americans back in charge of the republic.'

The For the People Act is a comprehensive democracy reform package that will:

Make it easier - not harder - to vote, by:

  • Expanding automatic voter registration and same-day registration.
  • Strengthening vote by mail, early voting and ballot access.
  • Combating voter intimidation and voter suppression.

Protect our democracy, by:

  • Safeguarding our elections from foreign interference.
  • Fixing partisan gerrymandering.
  • Promoting digital ad transparency.

Put people first, by:

  • Forcing disclosure of dark money.
  • Reining in lobbyist influence.
  • Enforcing ethics and conflict of interest rules for all government officials.
  • Empowering small donors with matching funds paid for by lawbreakers, not taxpayers.
