City Officials Celebrate Completion of Roadway Repairs in Upper Ninth Ward Community

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor LaToya Cantrell today was joined by New Orleans City Councilmember for District D Eugene Green, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Infrastructure Joseph Threat, Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) Project Administrator Mark Van Hala, and other City officials and community members to celebrate the completion of the $3.5 million St. Claude Group E roadway project. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on the corner of Feliciana and North Johnson streets in the Upper Ninth Ward community.

"Thanks to our residents for their patience and vigilance as we continue working through infrastructure projects," said Mayor Cantrell. "We know that infrastructure work is not painless, but we are building for the future of our city. We have reached a tremendous milestone in the Joint Infrastructure Recovery and Response Program (JIRR), now with 54 percent of our projects either completed, in construction, or in the bid and award phase. This city is moving in the right direction while ensuring that we embrace and face the inflation, capacity, and supply chain challenges that we are seeing today. We will not be distracted and will pivot as necessary to make sure that New Orleans is better than ever."

The Department of Public Works contracted Boh Bros. Construction Co., LLC to repair approximately 10 blocks of roadway funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The project included the repair of damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons, pavement of asphalt roadways from curb-to-curb, asphalt or concrete patchwork, replacement and/or repair of damaged underground water, sewer and/or drain lines and the installation of Americans with Disability Act-compliant curd ramps at intersections. The project's architectural design was created by Hatch Engineering.

"I'm pleased that a project of this nature has been completed in District D," said Councilman Green. "It is motivating to note that the completion of the St. Claude Group E full reconstruction project has made our residents safer from flooding. In fact, the completion of this comprehensive reconstruction has enhanced the quality of life in the impacted communities. This is good news."

Construction began on the St. Claude Group E project in December 2020 as a part of the City's JIRR program coordinated in conjunction with the SWBNO. Currently, there are 12 roadway projects under construction in City Council districts C and D valued at $163 million.
