Important Construction & Traffic Updates for Charleston-Arastradero Area (News)

Be Prepared for Some Lane Closures & Delays

The City of Palo Alto is currently working on several construction projects in the Charleston-Arastradero area. This is a heavily-trafficked route to several schools and businesses, serving as an east-west connector for the southern section of Palo Alto. Among other things, the corridor services 11 schools, several parks, shopping centers, community centers, senior living facilities, and a library.

As many schools begin the fall term during the week of August 13, we are deferring some construction work in order to minimize traffic congestion and enhance safety measures for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. You can find important updates on current construction projects and temporary schedules listed below. We thank you for your consideration of everyone traveling and working in this area and remind you to please be safe.

Utilities Undergrounding Project

The City of Palo Alto Utilities Department (CPAU) is working on a utilities undergrounding project from West Charleston at the corner of Wilkie Way, crossing El Camino Real towards Arastradero Road, and up to the corner of Alta Mesa Avenue.

Regular Construction Hours: Monday through Friday, 8am - 6pm along West Charleston and Arastradero Road.

Traffic Impacts: One lane of traffic will be closed in each direction. Beginning Wednesday, August 15, construction activity will be concentrated along Arastradero Road between El Camino Real and Alta Mesa Avenue. Some sidewalk closures will be necessary for excavation work. Traffic controls are in place with signage for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. All road and sidewalk closures will be clearly marked with detours.
