Hartsfield-Jackson Prepares for Winter Weather

Airport prepares for anticipated wintry mix of rain, ice and snow

ATLANTA -Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is actively preparing for this weekend's expected winter weather event. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a wintry mix of rain, ice and/or snow is possible between the evening of Saturday, Jan. 15 and the morning of Monday, Jan. 17. ATL officials began coordinated winter weather calls on Jan. 12 and Emergency Operations Center will remain active until 8 a.m. Monday.

ATL is ensuring all facilities are prepared to minimize impacts, including fueling operations, snow removal and deicing equipment, implementing staffing plan with 12-hour shifts, and facilitating deicing requests from airlines. ATL's Department of Emergency Management held an in-depth simulated winter weather preparedness exercise on Dec. 1, 2021. This annual exercise included participants from various Airport divisions and partnering outside agencies, including the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and NWS.

"Just over a month ago, we conducted our annual winter weather training exercise in preparation for the winter season," said Airport General Manger Balram "B" Bheodari. "Our dedicated staff is working diligently to keep any impact to operations at a minimum and to ensure the airfield remains open and operational."

ATL has the following winter weather resources on-site for deployment:

9 liquid deicing brine trucks6 solid deicing spreaders 4 solid deicing trucks8 snow brooms13,000 gallons of liquid brine95,000 gallons of liquid deicer 360 55-pound bags of solid deicer74 1-ton bags of solid deicer15 tons of sand/salt mix

Due to evolving weather conditions, passengers should arrive at least two hours ahead of their flight. In the event that airlines have cancelations and/or delays, we strongly encourage passengers to check with their airlines for the most up-to-date flight information and monitor the Airport's social media channels.
