Water Improvement Projects Overview

WATER IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS OVERVIEW
MAYOR DAN F. AGNEW

April 29, 2024

The City of Grinnell has been working hard the past two years with city staff, McClure Engineering, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), and our citizen advisory group to advance the design of several water system improvements. The information included in this overview will provide an update on that work and a schedule for completion. I am excited to report that we are transitioning from the design phase to the construction phase for these improvements.

The water system improvements either completed or underway include:

  • Emergency water connection - completed.
  • Three miles of water main replacement - completed.
  • New Jordan Well No. 10 - currently out for bid.
  • New raw water transmission line - design 100% complete, under IDNR review.
  • Construction of a new one-million-gallon water tower - design 60% complete.
  • New drinking water treatment plant - design 95% complete, under IDNR review.

The total cost of these improvements is currently estimated to be $35-$40 million. It is difficult to estimate construction costs in the current economic climate. We will share more information about the impacts on water rates in a future communication when actual construction costs are known. We will also be sharing information about the work underway to help residents replace their private lead water services in the near future.

We are fortunate that the community has supported investment in several major infrastructure projects. These include the reconstruction of all public infrastructure in the downtown, construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, the Drake Community Library, the Grinnell Public Safety Building, the Grinnell Mutual Family Aquatic Center, a new City Hall, the complete renovation of Central Park, significant investment in the rehabilitation of the sanitary sewer collection system, millions of dollars invested in street and sidewalk projects, and many others. We appreciate your continued support as we complete yet another significant investment in our collective future.

We are collaborating with local partners to provide you with accurate, useful, and timely information related to this project and other work of the city. If you want to stay up to date on our work on this project please read the Grinnell Herald Register, listen to KGRN, subscribe to the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce newsletter, visit the City of Grinnell website, watch for future mailings, or contact us directly at (641) 236-2600.

We appreciate your support and patience as we advance this work.

Sincerely,
Mayor Dan F. Agnew
