Public Works Paint a Plow Program opens for area students, organizations

Program to build awareness for snow fighting efforts and winter driving tips

Even during the dog days of summer, the Department of Public Works is thinking about snow and the Department wants you to start thinking about it too.

Returning this year is the Paint a Plow Program. Paint a Plow aims to educate residents of all ages about some of the best practices drivers and pedestrians should follow when encountering snowplows on City roads.

"We often promote work zone safety reminders, but we rarely talk about how motorists should adapt their driving around our wintertime machinery," said Public Works Deputy Director of Operations Sie Maroon. "Over the years we've seen a lot of hesitation and concerning driving behaviors when motorists encounter snowplows or approach our salt trucks."

The Paint a Plow Program is open to Peoria Public Schools students and area nonprofit organizations. Students and participants can engage in discussions surrounding winter weather safety while painting winter safety messaging on a snowplow blade. The art-covered blades will then be mounted on a plow truck and used to fight snow throughout the winter season.

Public Works is currently accepting applications for the Paint a Plow Program. Those interested in participating should complete an application and participation waiver. Applications and waivers can be found at www.peoriagov.org/paint-a-plow/.

"We hope this program gets the safety conversation going early on before the snow hits," Maroon said. "Everyone needs to know how to safely interact with our snow fighters."

The application period will be open until Tuesday, September 6. Following the application period, applicants will be selected, and plows will be delivered between September 12 and October 10 for painting. For more information about the program contact Nick McMillion at [email protected].
