Mexico wishes every success to the new president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro

On behalf of the Government and people of Mexico, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard conveyed his congratulations and best wishes to the new President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who took office today.

Dr. Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Foreign Secretary Ebrard attended the presidential inauguration in Bolivar Square in Bogotá.

"We are very pleased with President Petro's victory," said Secretary Ebrard, who will meet tomorrow with the new president and Vice President Francia Márquez.

"Mexico's wish is for President Petro to be very successful, for Colombia to be successful. He represents a new era, new ideas, and there is a lot of affinity with Mexico. We think he will make big changes in Colombia that are of interest to all of Latin America," he added.

  • Agreement to promote the Pacific Alliance and the Mexico-European Union agreement

While in Bogotá, the foreign secretary met with representatives of the European Union, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Palestine and Peru.

With the president of the Republic of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, Foreign Secretary Ebrard agreed to promote greater trade and cooperation between the two countries. Mexico reaffirmed its support for Ecuador's membership in the Pacific Alliance.

In a separate meeting with Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves, Secretary Ebrard thanked Costa Rica for its interest in resuming negotiations to join the Pacific Alliance as a member state. The Mexican foreign secretary also conveyed the greetings of President López Obrador and discussed preparations for President Chaves' upcoming visit to Mexico.

In his meeting with Riyad al-Malki, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Palestine, Secretary Ebrard reiterated the interest in strengthening the political dialogue and cooperation. The two officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a mechanism for periodic consultations on bilateral, regional and international issues.

He also held a productive meeting with the Vice President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, and the newly appointed Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, to follow up and deepen the agenda agreed upon during Secretary Ebrard's meeting with President Castillo on August 3.

The Mexican and Peruvian officials agreed to establish working groups to promote bilateral cooperation in lithium, energy and the aerospace industry, and to continue working within the Pacific Alliance with a view to the 17th Summit next November.

In the meeting with the Foreign Minister of Portugal, who attended the ceremony as a representative of the European Union, they agreed to promote the bilateral economic relationship by organizing a Portuguese business mission to Mexico this year, making progress with the ratification of the Mexico-EU Global Agreement, and re-establishing the CELAC-EU bi-regional dialogue with a ministerial meeting in the near future.

Lastly, in the meetings with the Latin American countries, the Foreign Secretary presented Dr. Nadine Gasman as the Mexican candidate for Director of the Pan American Health Organization, an organization that needs an urgent change of leadership after proving ineffective in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
