CITY OF MARCO ISLAND CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

(August 12, 2022) On August 27, 1997 the residents of Marco Island voted to incorporate and Marco Island became a City. The City is planning a week of activities to celebrate the 25th Anniversary.

August 22: Scavenger Hunt and Beach Day: The day will begin with a beach clean up hosted by the Marco Island Civic Association (MICA). It will begin at 8:00am at South Beach and end at the JW Marriott where there will be cold drinks on the beach. At 10:30am residents will begin a scavenger hunt at the Marco Island Historical Museum. Several local organizations are participating which will give residents a chance to find clues and prizes around the City. From 10:00am - 6:00pm the Marco Island Library will host a scavenger hunt for kids.

August 23: Athletic Day: The Marco YMCA will host open swim and open fitness classes for Marco Island residents. Blue Zones of Southwest Florida is hosting a 25 minute walk at 6:30pm beginning at Mackle Park. Sign up via Eventbrite at https://bluezoneswalk25anniversary.eventbrite.com. Our elementary school students will also walk for 25 minutes to recognize 25 years. Come and watch City employees and our local school teachers play kickball at Winterberry Park from 4:00pm - 5:30pm. Cheer on your favorite teacher or City employee.

August 24: Art Day: "Then and Now" art will be displayed at the Marco Island Academy for parents and residents to view from 4:00 - 6:00pm. Art @ City Hall Open House for the public from 4:30pm - 5:30pm and Marco Island Center for the Arts will host an evening event from 5:30-7:00pm. Our elementary school children will have a coloring contest, and students from the elementary school and middle school will attend an assembly with members of the Historical Society.

August 25: History Day and Employee Appreciation: There will be a history program at the Library at 2:00pm with local historian Craig Woodward. A historical display will be in the lobby of the Marco. Marco Island History Museum from 9:00am - 4:00pm. City staff will be honored at a luncheon at Mackle Park. If you see a City employee please thank them for serving the residents of Marco Island.

August 26: City Government Day and Evening Concert: From 2:00pm-5:00pm, City police, fire, public works, and utility vehicles and equipment will be on display at Mackle Park. Bring the kids to see these cool vehicles while residents will have an opportunity to meet Council members and City administration. From 7:00-9:00pm, a free concert by "The Rockefellers" will be held at the Marco Lutheran Church. Get ready to dance! Tickets are available from August 15-19th at Mack Park. Pick up your tickets in advance as seating is limited.

August 27: City of Marco Island 25th Anniversary Adult Prom: We will cap off the week of celebrations with an Adult Prom at the Hilton Marco Island Resort from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce beginning August 15th between 10:00am and 2:00pm. The "prom" will have a 1990s theme to recognize Marco Island becoming a City in 1997. There will be a disc jockey, dancing, professional photography, and hors d'oeuvres.

Throughout the week, businesses that have been operating on Marco Island for 25 years or more will be recognized. #Marco25 will be featured on signs and on social media to highlight and tag each celebratory event. Mark your calendars and join in the fun each day August 22 - 27.

The 25th Anniversary Celebration Committee includes reprsentatives from the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, the Marco Island Historical Museum, the Marco Island Civic Association (MICA), the Marco Island Center for the Arts, YMCA of Southwest Florida: Marco YMCA, Marco Island Academy, the Marco Island Charter Middle School, Tommie Barfield Elementary School, Collier County Public Library on Marco Island, the Marco Island Historical Society, the Coastal Breeze News, and many City staff members.
