October 19, 2019 - Hornets Sports & Entertainment President & Vice Chairman Fred Whitfield will host more than 600 guests at Spectrum Center tonight for the 12th Annual Hornets Heroes Gala. The black tie fundraiser, which supports the Charlotte Hornets Foundation, will feature the entire Hornets team in their finest attire and basketball shoes, with ESPN commentator Sage Steele acting as the evening's host. In addition to the main program, the red-carpet event also includes a cocktail reception, dinner, entertainment and opportunities for guests to participate in a silent auction, raffle and sneaker contest.
In addition to raising funds for the Charlotte Hornets Foundation, the Hornets Heroes Gala also serves as an awards celebration, recognizing individuals for their contributions to the Charlotte community. This year's honorees are Dr. Michael Marsicano, President & Chief Executive Officer of Foundation For The Carolinas (Education Hero); Anne Springs Close, Chairwoman of the Springs Close Foundation (Hunger Hero); the Life Event Services Team at Bank of America (Military Hero); and Dr. Michael S. Hoben, Senior Physician Executive in Novant Health Medical Group (Wellness Hero).
Master of Ceremonies Sage Steele is a renowned ESPN commentator best known for serving as an anchor for the 6 p.m. ET SportsCenter. Steele has also lead on-site, day-long and pre-event coverage roles on the road for SportsCenter at the biggest sporting events of the year, including the NBA Finals, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Masters, the College Football National Championship and many more. In addition to anchoring and commentating the world's top competitions, Steele serves as a board member for the Pat Tillman Foundation and is passionate about working alongside military veterans.
Education Hero Dr. Michael Marsicano joined the Foundation For The Carolinas in 1999 after serving as President & CEO of the Arts & Science Council in Charlotte for 10 years. Managing assets, owned and represented, of $2.5 billion, the Foundation For The Carolinas holds 3,000 charitable funds and ranks as the sixth-largest largest community foundation in the United States. Since Dr. Marsicano has been at its helm, contributions to the Foundation have totaled more than $4 billion and grant awards more than $2.6 billion.
Hunger Hero Anne Springs Close is the Chairman of the Springs Close Foundation, a position she has held since 1983. Her years of delivering meals to homebound seniors in Fort Mill, SC, led to the Foundation helping Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina establish a senior food box program that was piloted in York and Lancaster counties, and now serves tens of thousands of seniors throughout the Metrolina region. The Foundation also focuses on ending child hunger and has supported the Food Bank's backpack program for over a decade, providing food to children at schools in Chester County, Lancaster County and the Fort Mill area of York County.
This year's Military Hero, the Life Event Services Team of Bank of America, provides personalized connections to resources and benefits by tapping experts inside and outside the company. More than 100,000 Bank of America team members globally have worked with the dedicated and empathetic LES team for needs around complex leaves of absence, critical event support, domestic violence support, retiring from the company within 60 days, survivor support, terminal illness support, transgender and gender identity support, medical accommodations in the workplace and military support. Life Event Services supports employees facing a deployment and permanent change of station move. They also help teammates that need connections to community resources, confidential counseling, childcare, or other referral programs and services.
Wellness Hero Dr. Michael S. Hoben joined Novant Health as a family physician in 2001 and continues to see patients at Cotswold Medical Clinic. Dr. Hoben has held several leadership roles at Novant Health over the last 18 years. He has served as Chief of the Department of Family Medicine, SubMarket Physician Executive in Charlotte, System Service Line Leader for Community Medicine, and currently serves as a Senior Physician Executive in Novant Health Medical Group.
