OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING - 6800 BLOCK OF CERRITOS AVENUE

The Long Beach Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on April 26, 2024.

At approximately 8:36 pm, officers were dispatched to a report of a person with a gun inside a residence on the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue. Through their preliminary investigation, officers learned this was an armed home invasion robbery, where the male adult suspect entered the home and demanded items from one teenage victim and two adult victims. Officers also learned the suspect was still inside the yard of the home, armed with a firearm.

Officers got the three victims out of the residence safely. Officers also located the suspect in the yard; he was still in possession of the firearm.

Officers engaged in verbal de-escalation for over an hour as they tried to negotiate the suspect's surrender. The Department had activated the SWAT team, who were on scene and preparing to deploy, when the officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck once in the upper body. Officers rendered medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. Paramedics transported the suspect to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect's identity is unknown currently.

Officers recovered a replica firearm.

No officers were injured, and no other injuries were reported.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene.

Officers were equipped with body-worn cameras. LBPD is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible.

As with all officer-involved shootings, the Department will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident, as they do with all officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death. The California Department of Justice has been notified of this incident.
