Woodstock Park Improvement Project Nears Completion

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - After two years of construction, the Woodstock Park Improvement Project, a partnership between Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation and HRSD, is nearing completion and the park and new skatepark will reopen to the public following a short ceremony at 10 a.m. on June 16. The project has brought a wealth of improvements to the heavily utilized community park, including upgraded amenities and a 5.2-million-gallon wet weather offline storage tank that provides the base for the brand-new, 30,000 square foot skatepark facility while also helping to reduce sanitary sewer overflows.

The state-of-the-art skatepark was designed and built by the creative minds at Team Pain Skateparks with community input gathered online and at two design workshops. The park showcases a mix of transitional and street elements including premium features such as:

• Snake run and two-level bowl with waterfall, five corners, and two hips
• Quarter pipe with extension
• Ledge runs, stair sets, wall rides, snake run, banks, hips, rails, and other custom ledges
• Warm-up area
• Shaded viewing spots

'The partnership between the City and HRSD has been a model for how these joint efforts can effectively bring great things to the community,' said Michael Kirschman, Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation Director. 'Not only are residents getting a fantastic new skatepark and gorgeous park improvements, they're also getting a piece of infrastructure that while hidden below the
park, will have a significant, positive environmental impact.'

'While everyone wants their wastewater treated effectively to ensure protection of public health and our treasured local waterways - no one really wants a wastewater facility in their neighborhood,' said Ted Henifin, HRSD's General Manager. 'This project and our innovative partnership with the City changes that paradigm proving investments in wastewater infrastructure can provide positive outcomes for neighborhoods way beyond clean water. It just takes some imagination and willingness to work together.'

The Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs Department also partnered with Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation to solicit artists to create a series of murals on the upper level of the skatepark, which will be prominently debuted during the opening.

Brendan Tierney, a Virginia Beach-based artist and muralist, was selected to complete the installation. Tierney, a lifelong skateboarder himself, created a unique nod to Virginia Beach's skate culture, including a variety of vibrant imagery, tributes to city, skateboarding moves and even includes an octopus and cheese skate ramp!
