Louisiana coal terminals still without power

Coal terminals near New Orleans were still without power today, more than a week after Hurricane Ida made landfall in southern Louisiana.

Suncoke Energy said power to its Convent Marine Terminal is estimated to be restored within the next two weeks. But the facility could be back on line sooner given recent progress in power restoration efforts.

Suncoke previously reported modest damage to the terminal itself, and said operations would resume within two days of power being restored.

Kinder Morgan said today it started assessing damage to its International Marine Terminal. But the company is still experiencing challenges with limited access to the facility and loss of power.

The estimated power restoration date for the International Marine Terminal and Host's United Bulk Terminal is 29 September, according to Host.

Impala, which owns the Burnside Terminal, could not be reached for comment. But Host said power was set to be restored to that facility today.

Shippers with easy access to the railroads may be able to divert export volumes elsewhere while others will have to wait for terminals to reopen.

The US Coast Guard lifted most major restrictions on vessel movements on the Mississippi river over the weekend and early this week.

It rescinded today the daylight-only transit restriction for vessels between mile-marker 114 and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

All sections of the river were reopened to traffic on 4 September when Entergy cleared power lines that fell into the river upstream from New Orleans.
