MSK Leaders Recognized in Crain’s New York Business 2021 Notable in Health Care List

Memorial Sloan Kettering is proud to announce that President & Chief Executive Officer Craig B. Thompson, MD, Director of the Center for Health Policy and Outcomes Peter B. Bach, MD, Vice President of Scientific Education & Training Ushma Neill, PhD, and Postdoctoral Research Fellow William E. Rosa, PhD, are included on the Crain's New York Business 2021 Notable in Health Care list.

This year's list honors New York City's healthcare professionals-who are indisputably the heroes of the Covid-19 pandemic. Included in this report are the leaders of some of the top hospitals in the world, right here in New York City. Among this group are the heads of insurance companies and nonprofit organizations, city officials, entrepreneurs, scientists and physicians. These honorees have distinguished themselves through their expertise and innovation. They have shown stamina and commitment throughout the pandemic in addition to their professional, civic, and philanthropic achievements.

President & CEO Craig B. Thompson, MD

With extensive research experience in cancer, immunology and translational medicine, Craig B. Thompson, MD, became President and CEO of MSK in November 2010. His laboratory undertakes basic research in the fields of cell biology and immunology. This research has recently contributed to the resurgent interest in cancer cell metabolism and may form the basis for translational therapies to exploit the metabolic addictions exhibited by cancer cells. To date, Dr. Thompson has published more than 430 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 100 reviews.

Dr. Thompson is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a member of the Lasker Prize jury, and Associate Editor of the journals Cell, Cell Metabolism, Cancer Discovery, and Cancer Cell. He holds a number of patents related to immunotherapy and apoptosis and is a founder of three biotechnology companies. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians. He is also a fellow of the American Association for Cancer Research Academy.

Director of the Center for Health Policy and Outcomes Peter B. Bach, MD, MAPP

Peter B. Bach, MD, MAPP, currently the Director of MSK's Center for Health Policy and Outcomes, is a physician, epidemiologist, researcher, and respected healthcare policy expert whose work focuses on the cost and value of anticancer drugs. Dr. Bach has devoted his career to improving drug pricing and affordability. Heh is leading efforts to increase understanding of the US drug development process and to develop new models for drug pricing that include value to patients. His research concentrates on disparities in health care impacting minorities and women, the comparative effectiveness of cancer screenings, and the cost and value of anticancer drugs.

Dr. Bach has been inducted into the National Academy of Medicine, American Society of Clinical Investigators, and the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars. He served as a Senior Advisor for Cancer Policy at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2005 and 2006. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and editorials in scientific journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Vice President of Scientific Education & Training Ushma Neill, PhD

As Vice President of Scientific Education and Training, Dr. Ushma Neill oversees the academic curriculum and educational training for more than 1,500 scientific researchers who train in laboratories across MSK. Over the last 15 months, Dr. Neill has been busy moving all of Memorial Sloan Kettering's educational activities to the virtual world. Her areas of focus include enhancing the career and professional development opportunities available to trainees as well as designing courses in areas such as rigor and transparency, statistics, computational biology, and imaging. Dr. Neill leads MSK's women in science initiatives and coordinates the center's efforts around equity, diversity and inclusion for scientific trainees. A passionate advocate for scientific communication, she is deeply committed to developing platforms that allow trainees to enhance the efficacy of their communications to fellow scientists and to the lay public.

Dr. Neill spent two years as a manuscript editor at Nature Medicine, and then joined the Journal of Clinical Investigation as Executive Editor. During her nine-year tenure there, she led academic editorial boards at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Duke University/University of North Carolina in identifying, soliciting, and peer reviewing high-quality manuscripts.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow William E. Rosa, PhD

Dr. William Rosa is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Psycho-Oncology within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at MSK. An author, researcher, speaker and nurse practitioner, William Rosa is dedicated to narrowing palliative care disparities for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families. He is the editor of four books and has contributed more than 150 academic publications and over 100 keynote, conference, and guest lecture presentations. He serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management,and the American Journal of Nursing and as a board/committee member for multiple global health and palliative care organizations.

Dr. Rosa is an International Council of Nurses Global Nursing Leadership Institute Scholar, an American Psychosocial Oncology Society Health Equity Scholar, and the International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care USA Advocacy Focal Point. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and the New York Academy of Medicine. Recently, Dr. Rosa was given New York University's Young Distinguished Alumnus Award.headshot within this section.
