A major tree removal project is scheduled to take place within the vicinity of 429 South Mason Street (Mason Street and Mulberry Street area). The tree removal will occur on Monday, July 16 at 6:00 a.m. and is expected to be completed by 3:30 p.m. This tree removal project will require the full closure of Mason Street, detours will be available for traffic and MAX. Additionally, train traffic on the BNSF railway will not be scheduled during the tree removal so that crews can safely and efficiently complete the project.
City of Fort Collins Forestry routinely conducts Tree Risk Assessments using an industry standard rating system developed by the International Society of Arboriculture. These assessments are primarily conducted to determine the health of the tree as it relates to public safety. The large cottonwood involved in this project will be removed due to structural defects at the base and advanced decline in the canopy. Due to the defect at the base of the tree, it has been determined that pruning is not a viable option to maintain a safe environment in the area. The Forestry Department will schedule the planting of a new tree in the area and the wood from the removed tree will be repurposed.
During the removal process sections of the tree will be lowered by crane in a controlled manner to minimize impact to the surrounding structures, vegetation and wildlife. Forestry has worked with a wildlife specialist to inspect the tree for any animal activity. The wildlife specialist reported there is no current activity in the tree. Tree removal crews will remain on alert and if animal activity is reported they will adjust the project accordingly.
Please allow crews to work safely during this tree removal project. Please pay attention to traffic control and detours in the area as crews remove the tree. Thank you for your cooperation.
