04/18/2024 - Fones Road Update

Fones Road Corridor Update: PSE Gas Line Relocation Work Begins on April 22
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) will be moving gas lines along Fones Road beginning April 22 and continuing for approximately 8 weeks. Expect PSE crews to be working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

During construction, businesses, residents, and people traveling on Fones Road should expect the following general impacts:
  • Lane closures and flaggers directing traffic.
  • Noise, vibration, dust, and debris.
  • Large machinery and truck activity.
  • Detours for pedestrians and cyclists due to the closure of crosswalks, sidewalks, trail entrances, or bike lanes.

PSE will notify residents and businesses of any direct impacts ahead of the scheduled work. Questions or concerns about PSE's work should be directed to Matt Foster, Project Manager, 253.303.9373.

The PSE work is being done in advance of a larger City of Olympia construction project to improve Fones Road. The larger Fones Road Corridor Project will be constructed in 2024 and 2025. Relocating the gas lines is a necessary first step before the other street improvements can be constructed.

Fones Road Corridor Project Overview

Fones Road is a critical corridor directly serving commercial, industrial, and residential properties in east Olympia. This project will improve safety for people walking, rolling in a wheelchair, biking, and driving by adding sidewalks, protected bike lanes, an improved trail crossing, a roundabout with pedestrian crossings, improvements for vehicle flow and truck access, and lighting. Landscaping, new pavement, and upgraded water and stormwater system improvements will also be included in this project.

See overview diagram at the bottom of this message.

Project Schedule

Construction on the Fones Road Corridor Project is scheduled to begin later this summer and continue through the end of 2025. We will share more updates as we finalize the construction schedule in the coming months.
