Sebastian Haller and Ante Rebic fire Eintracht Frankfurt to victory at VfB Stuttgart

Sebastien Haller and Ante Rebic were both on target as in-form Eintracht Frankfurt eased to a sixth victory in their last seven competitive outings with a 3-0 triumph away to bottom club VfB Stuttgart in the Matchday 10 opener on Friday.

Goals: 0-1 Haller (11'), 0-2 Rebic (32'), 0-3 Müller (89')

The visitors gave an early signal of their intent when Rebic had the ball in the net after just five minutes, only for his effort to be ruled out by Video Assist for offside. It was of little consequence though, as Haller tapped in shortly afterwards to give Frankfurt a deserved lead following a strong start. Rebic got his goal just after the half-hour mark, heading in unmarked from Jovic's cross. While Stuttgart were second best for most of the half, they should still have scored at least one, with Mario Gomez and Nico Gonzalez both missing presentable opportunities.

Frankfurt very nearly added to the scoreline within seconds of the restart as Jovic was first to Danny Da Costa's right-wing cross, only to see his well-controlled volley fly over. The Eagles remained on top for the majority of the match, and although the home team did have the ball in the back of the net midway through the half, Berkay Özcan's effort was not given due to offside in the build-up. Frankfurt made absolutely sure of the points late on when Nicolai Müller headed in at the back post to seal another impressive win for Adi Hütter's side.

Match stats

  • Haller netted his seventh Bundesliga goal of 2018/19, meaning he already has more goals now than he managed in the entire first half of last season.
  • Rebic scored his first headed goal in the Bundesliga.
  • Müller scored his first header for two and a half years (since 14 May 2016 for Hamburg against Augsburg).
  • This was the first time Haller, Rebic and Jovic began a competitive game together for Frankfurt.
  • Stuttgart are enduring their worst ever start to a Bundesliga season, with seven defeats after 10 games.
  • Haller joins Jovic as the top scorer in the league with seven, a record they share with Dortmund's Paco Alcacer.
