2020-21 Rookie Watch

Matthew Wolff set the highest of bars when he prevailed at the 3M Open in 2019, as a non-member of the PGA TOUR and in what was just his third start as a professional. Among other things, it served as the fast track to his inclusion on the Rookie of the Year ballot that season.

Also among the five finalists was Cameron Champ, who prevailed at TPC Twin Cities on Sunday. (Neither was voted as the recipient of the Arnold Palmer Award in 2018-19. That honor went to Sungjae Im.)

The results of the third edition of the 3M Open will not influence voters of this season's ROY, assuming a ballot is distributed. Rafael Campos missed the cut by 10 strokes and slid to 150th in the FedExCup. Will Zalatoris and Garrick Higgo didn't compete.

Among notable non-members in play, Austin Eckroat led the way with a share of 16th place. With the equivalent of 53.500 FedExCup points, he'd now slot 210th among members and within 30.700 points of cracking the updated top 200 to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. Given the option to play the KFT full-time this summer via PGA TOUR University, he's split his time on that circuit evenly with PGA TOUR opportunities, with three starts on each as a professional.

The only other non-member to make the cut in Minnesota was MJ Daffue at T51. Because it signified his eighth start of 2020-21, he no longer can qualify as a rookie in a future season.

As noted in the table below, both Robert MacIntyre and Lucas Herbert missed the cut. The Scot accepted the exemption earned with his top 10 at The Open Championship. He needed no worse than to finish alone in 61st place at the 3M Open to qualify for Special Temporary Membership, but he finished one swing outside the cut line. After missing the green at the par-4 ninth hole - his 36th - he didn't convert his par putt from 14-and-a-half feet and bogeyed the hole.

This week's Olympics in Japan is an unofficial competition, but Official World Golf Ranking points are at stake in addition to the customary medals. Of the golfers featured on this page, seven are scheduled to compete at Kasumigaseki Country Club. It includes Higgo, Campos and five non-members.

Incidentally, Mito Pereira is a PGA TOUR member and he ranks 178th in the FedExCup on the strength of a T5 at the Barbasol Championship and a T6 at the 3M Open, but he will not total 10 starts because he's made only five. Therefore, short of a victory at the Barracuda Championship or the Wyndham Championship, the only way that he can qualify as a rookie this season is if his equivalent of FedExCup points finishes inside the top 125 among members.

^ - The value beside Will Zalatoris reflects where he would rank among members with his total of equivalent FedExCup points. If he's inside the top 125 at the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship, he'll earn PGA TOUR membership in 2021-22. He can become a member this season with a victory on the PGA TOUR or with two more wins on the Korn Ferry Tour.
